Great Advice to Freshman Daughter Going To College

To my wonderful daughter:

We are so proud of you.  We are so proud of the woman you have become. As you start this new journey, this new phase of your life, I wanted to write some thoughts to give to you.  This is advice I wish someone had passed along to me before I went off to college.

College is an exciting time. It will challenge you in many ways expected and unexpected. Keep your ultimate goal in mind on this journey.  Don’t forget what is most important – your relationship with your Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  If you remember the motto from school: “Seek ye first the kingdom of God” it will serve you well.  That is probably the best advice anyone can ever give you.  It is so important to keep God and your faith a priority in your life.

As with any relationship, spending time with God is important.  Reading the Bible and praying daily is the best way to spend time with God since the Bible is the word of God.  You will find as you travel on your journey that it is more true than any textbook, Wikipedia or any other source.  You may not appreciate it now, but if you spend time reading the Bible while observing life and reflecting on your experiences, you will find the wisdom and guidance to be life-changing.  In addition, it is important that you take time for worship at a good gospel centered church and surround yourselves with other Christians.

There will be many forces pulling you from a relationship with Jesus and other Christians.  As Pastor Easley says “Don’t let the world teach you theology.”  In other words, don’t let other people, teachers, the media or books tell you what is right and wrong.  You will need to surround yourself with people who are going to lift you up while keeping you grounded.  There will be a lot of people who don’t make good choices in college.  Make sure your new friends will be encouraging and help to keep you on the right path.  A good way to find like-minded friends is to get involved in a Christian club.

Discovering Your Purpose

Your new friends will influence you – if they are like-minded, solid friends, it will be a positive influence.  You will learn and grow through those relationships.  Those relationships, clubs, or sorority will give you an opportunity to try new things.  These experiences will help you to determine your purpose for your life.  What does God want you to be? How does God want to use you?  Remember that God has a plan for your life and that His plan is the best plan for your life, even when you may not understand why some things happen.  What you learn in college will be important to how God uses you.  So take the opportunity to learn and grow.

The Importance of Good Choices

You have been a responsible woman so far and we know you will continue to make us proud through your choices.  Without your mother and I around, it will be up to you to make the right decisions on your own.  These choices will be seemingly trivial choices about what to eat or drink or how to spend your time or how to study.  Small decisions can become habits, which become a way of life.  Look to do the right thing always – even when no one is watching.  Resolve to use time well since small choices will add up quickly.  If you don’t use the time wisely you won’t learn the material and college could be a shorter experience than expected.  I know that you will make the right decisions and be rewarded with knowledge, good experiences and a degree. But you will be amazed at the number of people that don’t finish college.  It will generally be because of many small choices rather than one bad decision.

You have been blessed to go to a great college with many opportunities.  Make the most of it.  Continue to make us proud. We love you and know that are going to great things!

Each one offers a unique experience with your kids.

As parents, we all want to raise kids who are well-prepared for life on their own.  Kids with solid character who understand how to make wise choices. Choices in core life topics such as friends, dating, money, health, drugs, and how they spend their time.

Unfortunately, each year, millions of kids set out on their own, unprepared for what they’ll face- and that’s when they learn things the hard way- with consequences that can last a lifetime.    It was this critical scenario that led to the development of Trailmap for Life, a non-profit program solely focused on helping people understand & navigate the 10 most important topics in life.   Each of the 10 monthly sessions covers one of life’s 10 critical topics- with powerful videos, a workbook, & life-skills activities that make it fun & easy to participate!   This program offers life-changing insight from leaders & experts across the country…. And it’s forever changing those who experience it.

It’s easy to organize & host a group: Participating with other parents & their kids offers even more benefits – simply select the group option on the website & choose your meeting dates & times…then enter the email addresses of the parents you want to invite.  The website sends out the invites, tracks responses, and then throughout the program sends out automated communications & reminders based on the meeting schedule you set.    All you’ll do to host each session is follow a few short instructions, play the session video, and enjoy the experience with your kids & your friends.  No prep work is required at all!  And since all sessions are available 24/7 online, it’s ok if people can’t make all the group meetings – they can do those sessions anytime…

Whether on your own or as part of a group, this program helps you achieve the relationship that every parent wants with their kids and feel confident that you have prepared them well for life on their own.  We hope that you will join us for the adventure of a lifetime!
