Life Skills Curriculum and Activities for Dads and Sons

Don’t Go It Alone

Don’t swim alone. Don’t hike alone. You know those rules. But then why do we try to do life alone? Life is much harder and more dangerous than hiking or swimming,  so we shouldn’t try to do it on our own either.  We are far more likely to succeed if we have others who we can look to for wise council and advice when we are navigating life’s challenges.

Learn from One Another

Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17

Learning from another person or as a team provides many benefits.  Other people can challenge you through competition and by correcting you when necessary.  Another person can also hold you accountable for continuously improving.  This is why a coach or mentor is so valuable.  It is also why professional athletes always have a coach.

Support One Another

Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

Whether they’re called life groups, community groups, small groups or accountability groups, meeting together with one or more people who are on similar paths in life will help you overcome obstacles.  These groups provide valuable support by offering additional opinions, good advice, encouragement, or the simple comfort of knowing that others have, or are currently, facing the same challenges.  Additionally, a group of people meeting together can be a great way to build deeper bonds and friendships that will help you through the really difficult times.

The Wisdom of Community

It is important for fathers to share the wisdom of community with their sons. It is critical that they understand that others face the same challenges and are not in it alone.  While sports teams are a great way to teach them about teamwork, the focus tends to be winning and less about community. Teaching your son about the importance of sharing life experiences with others is a great way to ensure he has the support system needed to succeed in life.

Trailmap for Life was built on the model of fathers and sons living and growing in community.  This is why Trailmap for Life teaches the most important life lessons in a group setting.  We were made to learn and grow in community.  Trailmap provides the materials and instructions to ensure that you teach your son well.
